Pediatric Nutrition

Description: This course will provide the student with an intensive approach to nutritional problems in the hospitalized patient and to general topics in pediatric nutrition. Activities will include: didactic and clinical experience
in pediatric nutrition, patient contact, bedside teaching, rounds and conferences, and independent study in nutrition. The student will take histories, assess nutritional status and develop a plan for the patient's
management. A senior member of the faculty will serve as a tutor.
Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
A full schedule of clinical rounds (8-12 hours/week), patient care with fellows and nutritionists (12-18 hours/week), Clinics (8-12 hours/week), Lectures and case discussions (3-6 hours/week), at Children's Hospital, Harvard School of Public Health Dept. of Nutrition, Harvard Medical School Division of Nutrition, and other Harvard Medical area hospitals (Longwood conferences) are offered, along with a comprehensive syllabus and textbooks produced in our department.
Grade Criteria:
Honors with Distinction:
1. Supervised Nutritional assessment and management of critically ill patients to a semi-independent level of a fellow or dietician
2. Outstanding conference presentation of a case discussion or topic
3. Outstanding academic scientific and/or clinical interest in nutrition
4. Works extremely well with all staff and patients
Honors:
1. Supervised Nutritional assessment and management of critically ill patients to a semi-independent level of an intern
2. Excellent conference presentation of a case discussion or topic
3. Good academic scientific and/or clinical interest in nutrition
4. Works very well with all staff and patients
Satisfactory:
1. Supervised Nutritional assessment and management of critically ill patients

Unsatisfactory:
1. Observation only
