Grade Criteria:
Honors with distinction:
Functions at the level of a an early PGY-1 resident. To achieve this level, students should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of patients and their disease process. The students should demonstrate entrustable behavior in all core competencies including medical knowledge, patient care, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practices.
Achieving honors with distinction means that the students will demonstrate complete insight to the limits of their medical knowledge, communicate what they know to the patients in an appropriate manner, and recognize when they need more senior advice. In the clinical setting, the student who achieves honors with distinction will gather all information in the history and perform an adequate physical examination. The honors with distinction student will efficiently be able to interpret the findings from the history and physical. In addition, they will know how to implement and integrate feedback to improve their fund of knowledge.
In the operating room, entrustable behavior means that students demonstrate ability to participate in preparation and set up of the patient for each case. In addition, the students will demonstrate full understanding of the indications for each procedure and some of the advanced surgical nuances such as various approaches to each surgery.
Finally, students who achieve honors with distinction should demonstrate professionalism in their work by interacting with all patients and staff in a manner that is sensitive to and respectful of culture, race, and gender.

Achieving a satisfactory level means that the students will demonstrate some insight to the limits of their medical knowledge. In the clinical setting, the satisfactory student will gather most information in the history and perform an adequate physical examination, but may require assistance in interpreting the findings from the history and physical. They will communicate what they know to the patients in most instances, and may be uncomfortable in offering details of the care plan. They may require guidance in the implementation and integration of feedback to improve their fund of knowledge.

The satisfactory student will demonstrate incomplete understanding of the indications for each procedure, and may be familiar with various approaches, but in uncertain how to implement these concepts.

Unsatisfactory:
Functions below the level appropriate for senior medical student. To achieve this level, students will demonstrate incomplete knowledge of patients and their disease process. The students should demonstrate pre-entrustable behavior in most of the core competencies including medical knowledge, patient care, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practices.
Achieving an unsatisfactory level means that the students will demonstrate lack of insight to the limits of their medical knowledge. In the clinical setting, the satisfactory student will gather some information in the history and perform an adequate physical examination, but may require assistance in interpreting the findings from the history and physical. They will communicate what they know to the patients in some instances, and may be uncomfortable in offering details of the care plan. They will require guidance in the implementation and integration of feedback to improve their fund of knowledge.
In the operating room, pre-entrustable behavior means that students in unable to participate in preparation and set up of the patient for most cases. The unsatisfactory student will demonstrate incomplete understanding of the indications for each procedure, and may will not be familiar with various approaches.
Finally, unsatisfactory students, despite shortcomings in other competencies, will be expected to demonstrate professionalism in their work by interacting with all patients and staff in a manner that is sensitive to and respectful of culture, race, and gender. Violation of professionalism principles will not be tolerated in any setting.
