Advanced Clinical Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery

Description: This course is designed to provide the student an in-depth exposure to the field of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and its principal subspecialty areas including otology, neuro-otology, head and neck surgical oncology. A combination of clinical opportunities in inpatient and ambulatory ORL-HNS subspecialties and related fields (i.e. radiology, radiation medicine, medical oncology, audiology, voice and swallowing)will be tailored to the career objectives of the student. The student will be an active participant on the inpatient service making rounds and providing care under the supervision of the attending physician and chief resident. Students will participate in the operating room and follow those patients post-operatively. Students will perform consultations in the outpatient clinic setting of attending physicians who will provide ongoing feedback about the students performance. Emphasis will be on increasing familiarity with clinical problems through direct patient contact and relevant background reading and through the acquisition of improved practical skills including performing the physical examination of the head and neck and operating room technique. Attendance at daily rounds, conferences, clinics and selected operations is expected. A half-hour presentation on a topic prepared from intensive reading is required. This course is strongly recommended for those considering a career in Otolaryngology.
Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
Students are expected to incorporate basic science into their formal presentation. Evidence-based medicine is a key component of one weekly conference.
Grade Criteria:
Honors with Distinction: Exceptional performance beyond that expected for honors criteria. Performs at time at PGY2 level. Honors: Functions at the level of a PGY1 in all settings. Always demonstrates knowledge of current patients including status, disease process, progress of work-up and treatment. Demonstrates understanding of operating room function and fully participates in patient preparation and operating room routine. Facilitates nurses, residents and attending duties on hospital floor and in the operating room. Demonstrates technical ability beyond training level in operating room. Demonstrates high level of professionalism and empathy toward patients and staff at all times. Satisfactory: Student is present and participates on rounds and in conferences. Demonstrates technical ability in OR consistent with level of training. Able to give full and fluent presentation of consultations. Gets along with residents, staff, attendings and demonstrates professionalism at all times. Unsatisfactory: Student is not on time or skips rounds, conferences or operating room experience repeatedly. Student is unprepared for OR cases; is unable to give fluent comprehensive presentation or perform adequate history and physical; fails to work well with residents in hospital setting. Demonstrates unprofessional behavior.
