Advanced Clinical Ophthalmology

Description: This advance ophthalmology course is an advanced clinical research elective in the area of vitreoretinal surgery in the Division of Ophthalmology at BIDMC. The course is structured to expose the student to both the clinical and research aspects of vitreoretinal diseases. The student will be expected to become an integral part of the retina service and be involved in outpatient and inpatient clinical areas, the surgical arena, and in clinical research projects. The student will work closely with the Director of the Retina Service, Dr. Jorge Arroyo, and other members of the retina service during their month long rotation. They will also work particularly closely with our clinical research associate and statistician during their tenure on the retina service. The student will be expected to attend MEEI grand rounds lectures, Longwood Medical Area Ophthalmology conferences, and BIDMC didactic session in ophthalmology. This course requires a 2 month enrollment minimum
Incorporation of Basic Science Content and Evidence-Based Medicine:
The student will be responsible for writing up a weekly case report on an interesting case. This clinical report will identify the underlying pathophysiology and provide recommendations based on evidence-based medicine.

Honors with Distinction:
Performance that is in the top 1% of all medical students.
Performance that is in the top 5% of all medical students.
Performance that is in the top 30% of all medical students
Performance that is below 50% of all medical students.
