Description: On the Core Neurology rotation at the Massachusetts General Hospital, students are taught the essential clinical skills necessary to examine, diagnose and treat patients with neurologic illness. Two parallel teaching services, C. Miller Fisher and Raymond D. Adams inpatient teams, offer extensive inpatient experience and teaching. Weekly assigned outpatient sessions with the staff in both general and sub-specialty clinics provide exposure to the practice of outpatient neurology, and to the management of common neurologic diseases. Students contribute to discussion in brain cutting conferences, and attend neurology grand rounds. Tutorials specifically for students include weekly clinical rounds with the clerkship director, didactic sessions twice weekly with a tutor, and weekly sessions on neuroradiology and neurophysiology. Students take call with their residents, and are encouraged to spend time in the emergency room in the evaluation of acutely presenting neurologic illness. A clinical examination is offered in mid-rotation which provides direct one-on-one attending clinical teaching and an opportunity for students to develop bedside skills with the aid of a staff physician, and an opportunity for the student to assess his or her own performance.
