Description: The Primary Care Clerkship provides a 9-12 month longitudinal experience in which students spend 2-3 sessions per month with a primary care preceptor. Students are placed in a community or hospital-based practice site. Students may work in adult internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatric sites based on their expressed preferences. Goals of the clerkship include learning skills in preventive care, assessment of acute complaints, and management of chronic disease, and understanding the role of primary care in the health care system. Longitudinal relationships with patients are emphasized, as well as the longitudinal oversight by a single faculty preceptor with whom the student works closely to develop content knowledge and primary care skills over time, with progressive autonomy in clinical assessment and decision making.
