The overall goal of the Core Clerkship in Surgery at BWH is to offer exposure to diseases encountered by surgeons and to gain insight into surgical decision-making. The clerkship is divided into four 3-week blocks. In two blocks, the student participates in the daily activities of an inpatient General Surgery service and sees outpatients with two assigned General Surgery preceptors. In the third and fourth blocks, the student spends one week in an Anesthesia rotation, one week in a Breast disease rotation and four separate weeks in a surgical subspecialty elective. For six of the twelve weeks, the student will spend one “shift” each weekend in the Emergency Department seeing surgical consults.
