Description:
This clerkship makes use of the breadth and range of psychiatric services in the BIDMC/MMHC system to expose students to fundamental issues in psychiatry: understanding and practice of interviewing skills, knowledge of psychiatric disorders and treatments, and familiarity and ease in talking with emotionally ill patients. Under the supervision of Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program attendings, students will work up and treat patients and participate in unit activities in one of three settings: on the Deaconess 4 inpatient service, at the MMHC Partial Hospital, or on the BIDMC Consultation-Liaison Service. Students will also have the opportunities to participate in outpatient evaluations and on call at the BIDMC ED, where they will see acute presentations of psychiatric illness and learn about the management of crises. Additionally, students participate in tutorials and a program of didactic seminars each Wednesday and visit an inpatient unit at Children's Hospital for an exposure to child psychiatry.
Evaluation:
Class performance, two written reports, clinical work, oral exam and written final examination.
