The subinternship in Medicine at MGH is designed to provide students with a wide exposure to common medical problems with an emphasis on increased responsibility for patient care. Students will be paired and together function as an "intern equivalent" under the supervision of a senior resident on the Ellison Medical Service. Students will assume greater responsibility for the continuing care of patients they have admitted until discharge. These responsibilities will include case management, technical procedures, clinical assessment and decision making, progress note writing, and daily communication with consultants and primary care physicians at MGH and the community. Students meet with the course director and faculty twice a week for patient management sessions and twice a week for physical findings rounds. All students are evaluated by house staff and attending physicians. This clerkship will provide students an opportunity to develop the skills and talents acquired in Core I into tools critical for success in any internship.
